The iconic peak of the Börzsöny (938 m), with a 22 m high lookout tower offering a panoramic view over the High Börzsöny; on clear days, even the Tatras are visible. The lookout can be reached via several well-marked trails (trail markers: K - blue, P+ - red cross, P - red), approx. 24 km round trip. Information boards at the top help identify the visible mountains.

The current tower was built by modernising a former geodetic survey tower; the terrain is moderately difficult and requires extra attention in winter or stormy weather. Particularly photogenic at sunrise or sunset; layered clothing and closed hiking shoes recommended.

Rustok-hill (Rustok-hegy) Panorama Point — termeszetjaro.hu

A quiet, lesser-known viewpoint accessible via an easy to moderate walk (trail marker: K – blue), approx. 8 km round trip. From the ridge there is a beautiful view of the Csóványos – Nagy-Hideg-hegy massif; can be well combined with circular routes (e.g. towards Fagyos-kút).

The marked paths run mostly in shaded forest, making the climate pleasant even in summer. A GPS map is useful at branching points; ideal as a family-friendly half-day program.

Várhegy Lookout Tower (Királyrét) — termeszetjaro.hu • Ipoly Forest Ltd.

The wooden lookout tower, opened in 2020, is an easy walk from the Királyrét parking lot (~1.5 km). A child-friendly stop, well combined with nature trails and the forest railway.

From the viewing platform you can see the High Börzsöny, the Visegrád Mountains and Naszály. It can be slippery after rainfall; closed shoes recommended. By car from Nagybörzsöny: ~45 minutes. On foot round trip: 28 km (trail markers: S+ – yellow cross, K+ – blue cross, K – blue).

One of the highest-located mountain huts in Hungary, accessible only on foot via the National Blue Trail; 26 beds, a buffet open year-round with hot meals and drinks. A classic destination in the High Börzsöny (trail markers: P – red, P+ – red cross, K – blue cross), 18 km round trip.

In winter routes are often snowy and icy; proper equipment is recommended. The hut is an excellent base for hiking to Csóványos and nearby peaks; it is worth checking trail conditions before departure.

Nagybörzsöny Forest Railway — official website • history (HU)

The origins of the railway date back to 1908; it was originally built for forestry and industrial use with narrow-gauge tracks. After the border changes following the Treaty of Trianon, the connection over the Watershed (Nagyirtás) was completed between 1922 and 1924, featuring a unique switchback system – a rarity in Hungary.

After freight traffic declined, tourism became the primary focus. Several sections were renovated after the year 2000. Today the trains run on schedule from spring to autumn, winding along streams and through forests – one of the true “must-see” experiences in the region. Timetables and ticket prices can be found on the official website.

Between April 2 and September 11, the railway operates on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. If you want to continue the journey to Szob, you must change trains at Nagyirtás and purchase a new ticket.

Antal Watermill — greatborzsony.hu

A still-operational, heritage-listed mill whose current structure dates back to 1851, though milling at this location has centuries-old roots. The overshot waterwheel and transmission system can be viewed up close during guided tours.

The house also presents the everyday life of millers; it is a family-friendly, engaging program for children. It is recommended to schedule an appointment in advance; the surrounding area offers plenty of great photo spots.

Opening hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm

St. Stephen Church (Árpád-era Romanesque) — greatborzsony.hu

The Romanesque church, built in the first half of the 13th century from brownish-red trachyte ashlar blocks, is one of the most valuable medieval monuments in the region. Its east-facing sanctuary, southern entrance, and the “Tartar heads” carved into the main cornice panels are iconic features.

The interior space is simple yet distinctive; the centuries-old stone walls, small openings, and well-proportioned mass make it a model example of early rural ecclesiastical architecture. Interventions from later periods are also identifiable, but the original character has been preserved.

Opening hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm

St. Nicholas Church (Baroque Parish Church) — greatborzsony.hu • mass schedule

Built between 1782 and 1788, this parish church features a Copf-style main altar and Baroque details. The three-part nave with Czech-style vaulting provides a bright, spacious setting for worship.

Due to its central location, it fits easily into a village walk; the harmonious unity of the exterior façade and the interior furnishings also makes it highly photogenic. It is advisable to check the mass schedule before visiting.

Miners’ Church (Church of Our Lady of Sorrows) — greatborzsony.hu

Medieval in origin with Gothic features; it stands atop a hill offering a beautiful panorama of the village. The 13th-century predecessor church was more modest in size, and the current structure preserves traces from several historical periods.

Wall research carried out in the 1960s clarified the floor plan and wall thicknesses, allowing the restoration to be based on solid scientific foundations. Above the pointed-arch main entrance, a miners’ coat of arms can be seen with the date 1417. The nave has a flat ceiling, while the sanctuary is covered by a star vault. The hilltop also serves excellently as a resting point.

Opening hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm

Evangelical Church — greatborzsony.hu

The Neoclassical church near the main square was built between 1847 and 1852 according to the plans of Károly Belcsák. Its restrained facade and well-proportioned interior reflect the taste of the era.

It is home to an active congregation; information about programs and events is available on the parish’s platforms. The surroundings are shaded, and the proximity of the Börzsöny Stream adds a special atmosphere.
